1990s
The Carreiro Years Begin...

In 1992, Mrs. Moreland retired and the Board hired Beauvoir’s fourth and current Head of School, Ms. Paula J. Carreiro.

The 1990s at Beauvoir were marked by tremendous growth at the School both in the physical plant and the community. At Ms. Carreiro’s urging the school undertook a strategic planning process in the mid-1990s that resulted in a plan to modernize the Beauvoir school building. While funds for the new project were being raised the outdoor play space was modernized and a kindergarten play deck was built.

Ms. Carreiro also strengthened the bond between the School and the Beauvoir parent community. In addition to having an open door policy with parents, Paula began monthly coffees in the Dining Room, grade-level transition meetings each spring, and added two division directors who are part of the administrative team to support faculty and parents.

Inspired by Beauvoir's rich history, Ms. Carreiro began to innovate and expand several programs. In the late 1990s, the Assistant Teacher program became the Associate Teacher program and today each classroom, with the exception of pre-kindergarten, has a directing teacher and an associate teacher for the entire day.  Under the nurturing guidance of the directing teacher, associates are able to refine their teaching skills while at the same time bringing their ideas, energy and enthusiasm to the classroom. To this day, Ms. Carreiro works to ensure that associate teachers play an active role in the excellent teaching that is a hallmark of the Beauvoir community.

Mrs. Taylor’s world-mindedness program was revitalized when Ms. Carreiro began the Global Studies program. Coming from Oklahoma, Ms. Carreiro was excited about the many resources available in Washington as a way to expand world-mindedness into a modern, curriculum-based program. The  Global Studies program now takes places between January and March and culminates in the annual Museum Night celebration.
